Now yer talkin pard!! Charles Starrett was always one of my favorite western heros. He first appeared in the film The Durango Kid in 1940. Columbia Pictures picked up the series in 1944 and it continued through 1952. Starrett appeared in over 60 films in all and retired after the last Durango Kid film. Dressed all in black, with a black kerchief as a mask and wearing a pearl handled six gun atop a white stallion with black saddle and reins, he was a childs vision of the perfect western hero. And the fact that he could change costumes between his alter ego, Steve , faster'n ya could blink wuz mind boggling!!
Tex Allen began appearing in B-westerns in the 1930's. He starred in a series of films called the Bob Allen ranger series, but the studio was looking for a singing cowboy and he was eventually replaced by Roy Rogers. He continued to appear in films all the way up until 1986.
Ron Soble appeared in True Grit, Papillon, The Cincinatti Kid, Joe Kidd and many other films of note during his career, but he always seemed to show up in the westerns, both in film and t.v. as a villain. He just had that surly look about him. He reminds me of John Davis Chandler, Jan Merlin, George Keymas, Jack Elam and Robert.J. Wilkie etc. I'm reminded of his role as one of the Earp brothers in a Star Trek episode with William Shatner, DeForest Kelly and Leonard Nimoy back in the 60's.
