Howdy Manco!!

Carleton Young was another of the character actors, who began his career as an extra in films, back in 1935. During his 35 year career, he appeared in nearly 180 films, many times uncredited. He was in Cassidy And The Bar 20, The Lone Ranger Rides Again and Buck Rogers. During the 50's, he became a part of the John Ford stock of actors and appeared in several of Ford's films, such as Sergeant Rutledge, The Horse Soldiers and Cheyenne Autumn. He also had roles in several big name films, like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and From Here To Eternity. He will probably be best remembered from another of Ford's films, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, as the newspaper editor, who uttered the classic line" When the legend becomes fact, print the legend". .Mr Young retired from acting in 1973.

I'm sure everybody already knows that Peter Graves was the younger brother of James Arness. The family name was Aurness and Jim dropped the U in his last name and when Peter followed his older brother to Hollywood, he changed his name to Peter Graves. He first appeared in Rogue River in 1951 and then had roles in Fort Defiance and an even larger role in Yellow Tomahawk. These films led to even better roles in The Long Grey Line, Night Of The Hunter and Fort Yuma, and eventually the role in the Saturday morning t.v. series, Fury, which ran from 1955-1960 and made him a known quality actor.
He next took on the series, Whiplash, which lasted for one year and then began making the rounds as a guest star on many of the 60's westerns, like Laredo and The Virginian, before being cast in the role that would make him a household name. That of Jim Phelps on the 1967-1973 t.v. series, Mission Impossible. Although he never reclaimed this level of fame, Graves continued to appear on both t.v. and film, including a couple of spoofs of the film Airport, titled Airplane and Airplane The Sequel. Because of his strong voice and his shock of white hair, Graves contined to do voice work and acting right up until his death in 2010.

Manco, you might want to double check that date for Peter Graves. IMDB and Wikipedia have him born on March 18, 1926.

Also today:

Lillian Bronson (1902-1995) was mostly a bit part actress, whose biggest role was as Aunt Ethel in the movie The Next Voice You Hear...She appeared in several TV shows until 1975.

Julie Parrish (1940-2003) Appeared in the Jerry Lewis classic The Nutty Professor, as well TV shows like Days of Our Lives, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Death Valley Days, and the Star Trek episode The Menagerie.
