Clem Bevens was in Vaudeville and Burlesque before making his 1st appearance in film at the age of 55, in the 1935 film, Way Down East. He was immediately typecast as " the old codger" and played these roles for the rest of his career. He appeared in Sergeant York, The Saboteur, Tall In The Saddle and many more. I will probably remember him best as the riverboat Captain in The Kentuckian with Burt Lancaster.
Wild Bill Elliott made his 1st film back in 1925, and appeared as a character in well over 100 films before hitting it big in 1938, in The Adventures Of Wild Bill Hickok. He made over 30 B-western films in this role and forever became associated with this character. After switching studios, he started going by the name, Wild Bill Elliott and continued to make westerns under this role name, until 1944, when the took on the role of Red Ryder in another series of films. With his 2 sixguns in a reverse draw, he was one of the best of the matinee cowboys. You will most often see a young Dub Taylor cast as his sidekick. Elliott continued to act until 1957, when he became a spokesperson for Viceroy Cigarettes and became the host of his own show in Las Vegas. Eliott died at the young age of 61 of lung cancer and is buried in Las Vegas.
Rudy Diaz was another western character actor, who first showed up in the 1968 film, Bandelero with Dean Martin And Jimmy Stewart. He next appeared in Coogan's Bluff, The Hellfighters, and McKenna's Gold. He also had roles in The Undefeated, Charley Varrick, Yuma and in several t.v. series, like Alias Smith And Jones and The Rockford Files. Diaz did his last acting in 1993.
Linda Darnell made her film debut at the age of 16, in the 1939 film, Hotel For Women and became one of the youngest leading women stars in Hollywood. Her 3rd film, Stardust was made in 1940 and in 1946, she hit it big again with My Darling Clementine oposite Henry Fonda and Victor Mature and Forever Amber. She never achieved this level of stardom again, although she continued to act until 1965. .Miss Darnell died that same year from the results of a house fire in her secretary's home in Chicago, Ill, at the age of 41. She will probably be best remembered for her role of Chihuahua in My Darling Clementine.
Michael Conrad made his film debut in the 1954 film Demetrius And The Gladiators and for the next 30 years, he continued to appear as a stalwart character actor in 25 films and innumerable t.v. series like Perry Mason, Alias Smith And Jones,. He will be best remembered for his role in the Burt Reynolds film, The Longest Yard and his regular role on the 1981-1984 series, Hill Street Blues as Sgt. Phil Esterhaus.
Although it may sometimes seem that Barry Corbin has been around forever, he actually made his screen debut in the 1976 t.v. series, Movin On with Claude Akins and Frank Converse. Since then, he has become one of the best character/supporting actors in Hollywood, with appearances in some of the biggest films for over 30 years, including Urban Cowboy, War Games, Any Which Way You Can, as Deputy Roscoe Brown in the classic Lonesome Dove, Croossfire Trail and again as a retired Deputy in, No Country For Old Men. Corbin lost all of his hair due to a scalp condition and these days generally appears shaven headed. He's still acting at the age of 72!!
Christopher"Chris" Mitchum is the 2nd son or the famous actor Robert Mitchum and although he looks nothing like his father, he has fared much better in film than his older brother, James, who is " the spitting image" of his famous father. Brought into film by his father in 2 of his father's films, Young Billy Young and The Good Guys And The Bad Guys, Chris has also appeared in Rio Lobo, Chisum and Big Jake wih the Duke. Although Chris has continued his career in acting, he will probably be best remembered for his roles in Big Jake and in The Last Hard Men with Charlton Heston and James Coburn.
