| Jane Darwell, in my opinion, was one of the best actresses that ever stepped in front of the camera. Who can forget the two completely opposing type characters she played in two classics....Ma Joad in Grapes of Wrath and the lynch mob member in Ox Bow Incident. John Ford liked her too and cast her in a number of films. She was one of the greatest. Paul Hurst also made a good guy and a bad guy in films with equal talent. I will always remember him as the villain in an old movie I used to see many times on TV as a kid called The Enchanted Forest about an old heermit (Harry Davenport) and a small boy....along with the animals of the forest...trying to save their homes from the ravaging tree cutters devastating the forest. | |

| Also today:
Jane Darwell (1829-1967) was a short, stout actress who made her film debut in 1913, acted on stage for 15 years until 1930 when she appeared in Tom Sawyer. Over the years she appeared in films like Huckleberry Finn (1931), The Ox-Bow Incident, Jesse James, Gone With the Wind, and The Grapes of Wrath, for which her portrayal of Ma Joad won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Her last film role was as the old lady feeding the birds in Mary Poppins.
Mark Lenard (1924-1996) is best known as the Vulcan Ambassador Sarek, the father of Spock, from the Star Trek franchise (as well as a Romulan and a Klingon!), but has appeared in dozens of TV shows. He played Aaron Stemple on Here Come the Brides, General Urko on the Planet of the Apes TV series, as well as episodes of Gunsmokee, Cimarron Strip, Hawaii Five-0, and Mission:Impossible.
Jean Peters (1926-2000) was an actress that tried to stay away from playing glamorous or sexy roles, for which, when she was under contract for Fox, she was suspended a few times. Her film career was short: she debuted in 1947 and retired from the screen in 1955, after appearing in Viva Zapata, Apache, Broken Lance, Niagara, and Blueprint for Murder. She made her comeback in 1973, making appearances in many TV Shows and TV movies until 1988. | |
