| Watching Hell on Wheels, Jim and I both said that we could see Gene Hackman twenty years ago playing the part of Thomas "Doc" Durant. Colm Meaney had that same type smile and charisma about him. Hackman, although retired, is one of the good ones still around. John Ireland has always been one of my favorites, be it in Red River, My Darling Clementine (in which he played my kin, Billy Clanton), Gunfight at the OK Corral, Little Big Horn, Return of Jesse James or Southwest Passage, he was always top notch for the role. Dorothy Malone was great in her many western roles, The Lone Gun comes to mind in which she played Skip Homeier's sister. And, of course, there were many more. She is still among the living also. Happy birthday to you. Saw Elsa Martinelli back in 1962. Didn't get to talk to her, but she appeared on stage with Red Buttons, John Wayne & Bruce Cabot when we attended the premier of Hatari in San Francisco. Birthday greetings to four of the stars of the celluloid days gone by. | |

| Tom, I totally agree with you on John Ireland and Gene Hackman. Dorothy Malone was good in The Last Sunset, and as Lon Chaney's wife Cleva in Man of a Thousand Faces. As for Elsa Martinelli, a very lovely actress, all I can imagine is the baby elephants following her around in Hatari! | |

| Howdy Pards!!
I probably remember John Ireland best as Cherry Valance in the original Red River and as the black clad gunman in Gunslinger with Beverly Garland.
Dorothy Malone appeared in many films, but like Tinhorn, I remember her best from The Last Sunset with Kirk Douglas and Rock Hudson.
Who would have guessed that Popeye Doyle in The French Connection and the preacher in The Poseidon Adventure would go on to become one of the top 4 or 5 actors in Hollywood, not to mention his roles in Bite The Bullet and Unforgiven, the latter for which he won a Best Supporting Oscar for. Gene Hackman is a tremendous actor and if he has retired, then like Sean Connery, we have lost another great one to retirement.
I'm not that familiar with Elsa Martinelli's work, other than Hatari.
