| Howdy Manco!!
I am unfamiliar with the work of D.W. Griffith, but Diana Douglas( not to be confused with Donna Douglas of The Beverly Hillbillies) is the wife of actor Kirk Douglas and the mother of Michael and Joel Douglas. She has been actng since the early 40's all the way through 2007. Piper Laurie, the beautiful redhead is better known from Twin Peaks, Children Of A Lesser God, The Hustler, Carrie, etc, and will be 80 years old today. The absolutely gorgeous Diane Lane, who will forever be remembered by western fans as Lory from the original lonesome Dove has been acting since 1979 and has appeared in many wonderful films, such as the thriller, Untraceable and is currently filming Man Of Steel. What a beauty!! Happy Birthday Girls!!

| Ed, I'm a little more familiar with the work of D.W. Griffith. I have a couple of his short films: The Battle of Elderbush Gulch and The Last Drop of Water. And I have also seen his 1913 epic Birth of a Nation. My personal opinion of Birth of a Nation, based on a novel called The Clansman, is a racist work. While it shows how during Reconstruction the Northern Carpetbaggers went into the Southern states and enforced Black voting rights and put Blacks into elected positions, it also portrayed Black men as rapists of White women, and glorified the Ku Klux Klan as avenging angels of White society. Griffith took a lot of heat over Birth of a Nation, so he followed up with another epic film, Intolerance (1916), which told four stories which tied together to show the dangers of prejudice. Griffith was also one of the founders of United Artists, along with Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and Charlie Chaplin.
You can find many of Griffith's short films on YouTube. | |
